11 year-old

The Problem:

I didn’t have a great understanding of what was lacking in my 11 year-old son’s diet, and how certain foods will impact his behaviors and abilities.

The Solution:

It took us a bit to realize what a difference the gluten free (GF) diet had made until one night it kind of hit me when “wait…there hasn’t been any slamming doors lately. His anger has started to dissipate.

One day we slipped with gluten and 11 year-old had a giant sandwich with a regular bun, which causes a stomach ache and total attitude change the next day.

We were able to help him recognize “hey that’s gluten that is making you feel like that and act like that!” That hit home for him. He’s been great with staying GF ever since.

The Proof:

My son was always one to stop something the second it got hard. His academics come so easily that if a sport or hobby required continued effort, he would give up quickly. The summer of 2022, he participated in soccer, initially excited about it, but the excitement wavered when he realized that he wasn’t as skilled as the other players, or when the coach redirected him during practice. However, he went to the games, he played (instead of sitting by the sidelines which is what he typically would have done) and sometimes he even had fun.

Most recently he has started playing the trombone and is doing a great job with the level of responsibility that playing an instrument requires. I’m not sure if we would have been able to do this with the kid we started the summer of 2022 with.
